Port Elizabeth changes its name to Gqeberha

The city of Port Elizabeth is changing its name to Gqeberha. The decision was officially approved on Tuesday by South African Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa.
The new name was submitted by Boy Lamani of KwaMagxaki, who said that Gqeberha was IsiXhosa named for Walmer Township, one of the first and oldest Port Elizabeth townships.
It is not just the name of the city that is being renamed but also the airport; The Port Elizabeth International Airport will be changed to Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport.
Last year, the minister, Nathi Mthethwa recommended an audit of offensive names, symbol and structures, like street names, public places, statues etc. He said that it was unacceptable that South Africa's Black majority population is still cultural minority when it comes to apartheid and colonial symbols still dominating the landscape.
Port Elizabeth, popularly known as PE, is the most populous city in Eastern Cape Province. The city is known for its numerous beaches. It is also the major seaport city in South Africa. The real South Africans nicknamed the city 'Friendly City' and the 'Windy City'.
The city is the biggest city in Eastern Cape Province and the fifth largest city in South Africa. It is one of the safest cities in South Africa. It has rich and diverse cultural heritage, And it is popular as an international and local holiday destination. It is simply the tourist capital of Eastern Cape Province.
